Sjostrom of Simi Valley sentenced to ten years in state prison for embezzling $265,000 from account of deceased friend

VENTURA,California-DistrictAttorney  GregoryD.TottenannouncedtodaythatJudgeMatthewGuascosentencedGeoffreyCharlesSjostrom(DOB09/25/1954)ofSimiValley,totenyearsandfourmonthsinstateprison.InDecember2013,ajuryconvictedSjostromof20felonycountsofgrandtheft,moneylaundering,forgery,perjury,andexcessivetakingenhancements.Thiscasewasinvestigatedby theSimiValleyPoliceDepartment. Sjostromwastrusteeofa trustmadebyFrankCopland,hislongtimefamilyfriendwhodiedofcancerin2005attheageof81.Over18months,Sjostromembezzled$265,000fromtrustbankaccountsand concealedhistheftsfromCopland’sbeneficiaries.  Whenhisactionsastrusteewerequestionedin2006,Sjostrominitiallyrefusedtomakeanaccountingoftrustassets. SjostromlaterfiledswornpleadingsinwhichheclaimedCoplandhadexhaustedhisbank accountsbeforehedied.Afterthebeneficiariesdiscoveredtheconcealed bankaccountsin2008,Sjostrom  claimedhetookmoneyfromthoseaccountsasrepaymentforalargeloanhemadetoCopland.SjostromproducedaforgedpromissorynoteostensiblysignedbyCoplandtosupporthisclaim.  Inadditiontotheprisonsentence,Sjostromwasorderedtopay$732,283invictimrestitutiontothetrust beneficiaries,andafineof$50,000. ____________________________________________________ Get free Citizensjournal.us BULLETINS.
