For centuries, torture has been used by humankind in order to meet various ends. Whether as punishment for a crime, for the extraction of information or as part of an execution- we’ve become devilishly good at devising ways of inflicting unthinkable misery upon each other. Here’s a look at some of the more brutal torture devised throughout history.
10. Rat Torture
Being in an enclosure with rats is torture enough; but apparently, this is not enough for medieval times. One of the most sadistic of all torture techniques involved having a cage with one open side strapped against the victim’s body. It would then be filled with large rodents and a heatingelement which would be placed on the other side of the cage. The rodents’ natural instinct led them to flee the intense heat. In order to escape they would burrow through the victim’s body with fatal results.9
9. The Chair of Torture
Just seeing this “chair” will make a person understand why medieval torture is so brutal. The unlucky victim would be forced to take a seat on the chair. The stick that can be seen in the leg-level of the chair has a handle that was intended to push the victim’s legs even harder against the tips. If this wasn’t enough, a similar device can also be seen for the hands, back and feet.
Even though this torture gives a sense of a quick death; a person could last a day or even more sitting on this chair. This way of torture was typically utilized to make a person confess their sins. If he told the truth, he’d go through a quick, painless death. If he refused, the torturer could turn the handle a little bit more, and the victim would feel an indescribable pain.
The victim would be alive until his blood slowly drained out of his body. This took a while because the tips themselves–and the pressure being exerted on the victim–would stop the blood from pouring out rapidly. This torture wasn’t used a lot. In fact, it was rarely used. But when a person was sentenced to it, he’d find a way to prevent it. There are records of people committing suicide before actually being subject to this torture.
8. Breast Ripper
It comes as a shock to many that none of the torturers really had any reservations about torturing women to death. In contrast, they were special devices created in order to destroy the feminine body parts. The breast ripper was used to torture women who carried accusations such as black magic, adultery, abortion, heresy etc. This device consisted of 2 metal claws which would initially be heated up. Then it was used on a women’s breast, while she is tied to the wall, till they became horrifically disfigured chunks of skin and would eventually fall off if left on for longer. “The spider” was a variant of the same device but the only difference was that this was attached to a wall instead of being handled by the torturer..
7. Death by Boiling
Can you imagine boiling someone alive in large pot? Though not common, this was an unusually cruel method of execution. There is plenty of evidence that it was practiced throughout human history. Archeologists have found human bones in cooking pots and hearths in China which were found to be around 500,000 years old.
In England in the 1500s this was the legal method of punishment. The victim was immersed in boiling water, oil or tar until dead. Imagine the fear the prisoner felt when they were taken to this deadly big pot to suffer their horrible fate.
6. Crocodile Shears
Crocodile shears are what they sound like; two iron-cast sides of a tube, the insides of which feature rows of spikes which are then heated by the torturer and placed on certain appendages. And here’s where it gets really really dirty: the crocodile shears are attached to the victim’s penis, and with only a modicum of applied tension, they slowly and painfully separate him from his only piece that proves his manhood. Depending on factors like blood loss and infection, death is more than probable — a point which surely contributes to the torture.
