US Coast Guard Rescues 12 Cuban Migrants off Bahamas

The U.S. Coast Guard rescued 12 Cuban migrants whose boat sank near Lobos Cay Island in the Bahamas, authorities said Friday.

Officers on duty Thursday morning at the 7th District command center were informed that migrants were stranded on Lobos Cay and suffering from dehydration, the Coast Guard said in a statement.

An HC-144 Ocean Sentry patrol aircraft and a MH-60 Jayhawk rescue helicopter were dispatched from the Coast Guard Air Station in Clearwater, on Florida’s Gulf Coast.

“Upon arriving on scene, the aircrew aboard the HC-144 dropped emergency supplies consisting of food, water and a radio. The MH-60 aircrew landed and safely embarked the migrants and transferred the migrants to Bahamian officials in Nassau, Bahamas,” the Coast Guard said.

None of the migrants was injured, according to the statement.

Last August, Cuban exile groups in Miami accused Bahamian authorities of abusing Cubans and other migrants held in immigration detention centers.
