The police do not police themselves. People are still being wronged despite the introduction of dash-mounted cameras, and the adoption of police-worn body cams is no different. To ensure a record of the truth of police interactions exists, and is accessible, we each need to film.
That’s why we’re happy to announce the Accountability Through Transparency Video Contest – the winner of which will receive a pair of Pivothead Sunglasses!
By documenting and publishing police encounters – both good and bad – transparency and common sense have a better chance of prevailing while empowering others to exercise their rights and hold public servants accountable for their actions.
It is important to stand against injustice at every iteration, no matter how slight (a police employee parking in a “no parking” zone). Failure to do that establishes a new norm, and the rights-violations become more frequent and severe (the brutal killing of someone for not obeying an arbitrary command).
Who watches the self-proclaimed watchers involved with the coercive monopoly called policing? We each do, and together, we are the network that is bringing positive change and a better reality.
