Housewife ‘picking’ ripe spaghetti

April 1st 1957.

The BBC Panorama program produced a film regarding the ‘spaghetti trees’. It discussed the market forces governing the spaghetti production and the difference between the Italian and swiss spaghetti production.

In 1957 the UK had nothing like the choice of food they do now. Spaghetti and pasta in general was not average fayre, many people had never even tried it, let alone had any idea of how it was made or how to cook it.

The BBC was inundated with requests about where these wonderful plants were available. At a time when post-war rationing had just come to an end, people were craving new foods after years of austerity.
