Los Zetas have taken firm control of the trafficking activities of undocumented immigrants, mainly Cubans, thru Mexico enroute to the US. Isla Mujeres, Cozumel and Cancun, are the three busiest points of this offense in state of Quintana Roo.
Security Cabinet Authorities report that people identified with the Cuban-American mafia were ceding control of the human trafficking activity to Los Zetas Drug Cartel. Deadly clashes resulted in a financial negotiation between the two groups.
The Cuban Mafia group was at the forefront of the trafficking of the illegal immigrants until October 8, 2012, when their leader was killed in the streets of Cancun in a dispute with the Los Zetas. Zetas were demanding extortion fees from the Mafia for moving the Cuban illegal immigrants thru Mexico. Another Cuban-American linked to undocumented trafficking, identified as Oniel Torna Rosado, was attacked with a firearm. Later Humberto Febles Santana, alleged accomplice of León was killed while transporting Cubans to Isla Mujeres to the United States.
Sources explained that trafficking in illegal Cubans is funded from payments made in Florida by family members to the Cuban-American mafia, to get people out of the island. They smuggle the people about 150 kilometers mainly in speedboats and occasionally in yachts with Florida license plates, to evade Mexican authorities. According to ESPN research magazine and Los Angeles magazine, in a preview of a publication that will appear next May-Dodger baseball player, Yasiel Puig, may have been the victim of these groups of people smugglers with his departure from Cuba.
