Los Angeles police officers removed antennas from police cars in several predominantly Black neighborhoods to disable the recording equipment and avoid being monitored while on duty, according to an inspection by LAPD investigators.
The department review found about half of the 80 cars in the Southeast division—which includes Watts and the Jordan Downs and Nickerson Gardens housing projects—were missing the antennas that help capture what officers say in the field. The review discovered at least 10 more cars in nearby divisions also had antennas removed.
Members of the Police Commission, which oversees the department, said they were alarmed by both the actions of the officers and the failure of the department to reveal their actions when they were first detected.MOREHERE
Cameras in police cars should be monitored by an outside 3rd party that has no close relationship to the officers becuase allowing them to monitor their own cameras creates a conflict of interest. It’s very common to find that the cameras are not functional, this is done to protect the officer from legal repercussions due to their own actions. In reality if they were honest cops they would make certain their equipment was working before going on patrol becuase if they are working inside the confines of the law the video would be there to defend them in court.
Of course, the notoriously corrupt LAPD cannot be caught on film during criminal acts, it doesn’t surprise me that one half of the entire force in the Southeast division want to hide their criminal activities.
