Weed - There’s Now an Airbnb for Stoners Called “AirTHC”

Marijuana.com

4/20 isn’t just an excuse to smoke weed. Every year, more and more businesses target this date as a prime time to launch their stoner-targeted company. Most of those companies hit Denver and the Cannabis Cup to launch their product or website.

This year, the most intriguing launch we’ve heard about it is a smokey riff on the popular home and apartment rental site Airbnb. While the site remains dormant (it launches on 4/20), AirTHC has got one thing 110% right: the name.

AirTHC is quick, it’s simple, it resonates, and it piggybacks off of a billion dollar corporation’s namesake. The (kind of brilliant) name alone will get AirTHC all kinds of press (and ptobably the ire of Airbnb) in the upcoming post-420 week.

So what exactly does AirTHC strive to do? At this juncture, the site lacks development and is pretty much an unusable blank slate (though that should change on 4/20).

In the mean time, they’ve launched an IndieGoGo campaign, and have an accompanying mission statement in tow:

Forget about lighting up at a bar or restaurant either—if the establishment had already banned cigarette smoking, marijuana smoking is a no-no as well.

So what’s a visitor to do?

Enter airTHC.

We connect visitors with Colorado residents who have marijuana-friendly vacation rentals, ensuring that you’ll have a private space of your own to smoke—legally—while you stay in Colorado.

The donations haven’t begun pouring in–yet. But once the media hits it and the catchy name hits the right investor’s sightline, that $10,000 could be raised in no time. And it’s a worthwhile idea, at least in theory.

As AirTHC notes, smoking in public remains prohibited in Colorado. Moreover, there’s not a hotel in Denver that will advertise and outwardly say they’re 420 friendly.

The old-fashioned ways of finding a pot-friendly abode remain viable: search the term “420 friendly” in Airbnb or in Craig’s List, and you’ll be met with a plethora of options (whether in Denver or in New York City). Still, those sites don’t appeal to the strict cannabis niche, and don’t make stoners feel too confident in their stay.

Of course, there’s the one, major concern: a site like this becoming a cop-radar. A few years ago–even in Colorado–it would be a major, major drawback and steer me far away from a site like this. But now? It’s legal to smoke weed inside your house and even on your front porch. Renting that home to a stoner–as long as it’s not filled with 100s of plants–seems totally legal.
