(Before It's News)

Here are 10 most notable firsts in world history that are worth mentioning. I picked the few that I felt really stood out from the rest and made my jaw drop within seconds. I am not opposed to women being heads of states and transgendered people being elected into office. I am just astonished to learn how long it took the world to realize that diversity is a part of life. What’s your take on these 10 firsts?

10. Joseph Valachi becomes the first person to expose the mafia.
Valachi was from East Harlem, NYC. His mafia career began when he joined a small gang called The Minutemen. The gang was notorious for burglaries and being able to escape in a minute or less. In 1963, he became an informant for the FBI and put the Mafia on the map for the first time in American history. His disclosure did not lead to any arrests of crime leaders. However, he was able to detail the organization’s history, operations, and rituals. His recollection was published across media channels and broadcast on the radio and television.

9. Robert Morris causes the first computer virus.
In 1988, Cornell University student Robert Tappan Morris created the first computer virus and unleashed it in cyberspace. He asserted that he was aiming to test the size of the internet. The Morris worm worked by exploiting known vulnerabilities in Unix sendmail, Finger, rsh/rexec, and weak passwords. However, the code became tremendously destructive. A computer could be infected multiple times with the virus and each occasion would slow the machine down considerably. Morris was prosecuted for releasing the worm, and became the first person convicted under the new Computer Fraud and Abuse Act.

8. Sirimavo Bandaranaike becomes the first female head of state.
Sirimavo Ratwatte Dias Bandaranaike was a Sri Lankan politician and the first female head of state in the modern world. She served as Prime Minister of Ceylon and Sri Lanka three times, between 1960–65, between 1970–77 and between 1994–2000, and was a long-time leader of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party. She remained in office, as Prime Minister, until a few months before her death, but had little real power. Most of the power was transferred to her daughter, the President of Sri Lanka. She died on Election Day, 10 October 2000, after having cast her vote for the last time.

7. Victoria Kolakowski becomes the first transsexual judge.
Victoria Kolakowski, an administrative judge in California working with the Public Utilities Commission, was elected Superior Court judge in Alameda County in November 2010. She became the first transgender person to ever serve as a trial judge in the United States of America. Kolakowski had a sex-change operation in 1991. Since January 2011, she’s served as  judge of the Alameda County Superior Court in a 51% in favor vote.

6. The destruction of the Carthage population becomes first documented genocide.
Ben Kiernan, a Yale scholar, argues that the annihilation of Carthage at the end of the Third Punic War (149–146 BC) was the first ever documented genocide. The war was a much smaller engagement than the two previous Punic Wars and focused on Tunisia, mainly on the Siege of Carthage, which resulted in the complete destruction of the city, the annexation of all remaining Carthaginian territory by Rome, and the death or enslavement of the entire Carthaginian population.
