Activists Fight Unethical NYPD Surveillance
Several protest groups are in the process of filing a formal complaint over the New York Police Department’s intelligence gathering operations, following revelations that undercover police had attended activist meetings and kept intelligence files on campaigners over the past two decades.
Activists will ask the inspector general to audit the controversial surveillance programs.
The ongoing investigation by the AP, who first broke the story, demonstrates how police have abused their powers – and the law – to monitor groups who oppose government policies.
The probe has uncovered many disconcerting intelligence operations, NYPD are also accused of paying informants to ‘bait’ Muslims – in which they receive funding from the White House.
