Most people in the “material world” allow spirituality or philosophy take a back seat to Reality and Truth. Both are not only consistent, but ever-present and unnoticed until “Enlightenment” sneaks up on you… unless you’re actively “searching for the obvious”.
Western philosophers, particularly Jean-Paul Sartre, call it the “Existential Moment”, a sudden ending of our perception of the Time / Space Continuum we call duration, from ‘then’ to ‘now’ as ‘Time’ moves us all through ‘Space’, both of which are the same thing.
Buddhist philosophy calls it “The Great Enlightenment” and says that it “comes once to all men, otherwise it would not be known as The Great Enlightenment”… and it is obviously better to have it early in life than on one’s deathbed.
It is also referred to as Nirvana, Heaven, The Awakening, Serenity, Tranquility, Peace and so on including “Rebirth”.
The experience itself is as close to death as one gets while living… “Time Stops” is a familiar phrase which refers to the infinite moment between the infinite number of moments we experience as duration or the flow of Time.
Not only Time, but everything, including the psyche’s journey through physical Existence is stopped for an infinite instant and an end of everything in the time flow can be perceived as ‘death’. But the body is still alive and the psyche continues its journey now with a new experience, a new beginning in which everything has to be relearned.
Your old world has ended and a new one is unfolding… I can imagine a large number of people having an Existential Moment at the same time: Total confusion:
