Former Governor of Aguascalientes Arrested for Fraud and Embezzlement

The former governor of the central Mexican state of Aguascalientes has been arrested for alleged embezzlement, authorities said Saturday.

Luis Armando Reynoso Femat was detained Friday night while attending a bullfight in the city of Aguascalientes, the state capital, a spokesman for the state Attorney General’s Office told Efe.

Reynoso governed Aguascalientes as a member of the conservative National Action Party, or PAN, from December 2004 to November 2010.

The politician is accused of defrauding the government coffers of some 26 million pesos ($1.9 million) via the illegal sale of state land, the local press reported.

The ex-governor was arrested on other charges last year but was subsequently released after posting a 9-million-peso ($690,000) bond.

Reynoso is accused by the state AG’s office of, among other things, simulating the 13.8-million-peso ($1.06-million) purchase of a tomograph during his tenure as governor.

The politician also is being investigated for other purported illegal transactions allegedly involving persons close to him, including his son, Luis Armando Reynoso Lopez.
