Gunmen Open Fire on Municipal Building in Michoacan, 2 Killed

Gunmen opened fire on the regional prosecutor’s office in Zamora, a city in the western Mexican state of Michoacan, killing a police officer and a civilian, state officials said.

The attack was staged late Friday by gunmen riding in an SUV, state officials said, adding that the criminals fired at the building in the Zamora Historic District with assault rifles.

State police officer Jose Reynoso Aureoles and a civilian identified as Pedro Andrade Castro were killed in the attack.

Reynoso was examining Andrade’s automobile registration papers when the gunmen opened fire.

Paulino Martinez Sanchez, police chief of the neighboring city of Jiquilpan, and an unidentified civilian were wounded.

Investigators determined that the gunmen belonged to the Caballeros Templarios drug cartel, the state government said.

Federal security forces killed the Caballeros Templarios cartel’s two top leaders, Nazario Moreno Gonzalez and Enrique Plancarte Solis, in February and March, respectively.

Moreno and other members of the Familia Michoacana gang formed the Caballeros Templarios organization after he was reported killed by the government in 2010.

Gunmen, meanwhile, killed two men and a woman in Maravatio, a city in eastern Michoacan.

The victims’ bodies were left on the side of the road that links Maravatio to the town of Tzurutzicuaro.

The bodies of the unidentified victims were taken to the coroner’s office, state officials said.

At least a dozen people have been gunned down in Michoacan in the past three days, officials said.
