THE Committee for the Defence of the Iranian People’s Rights warned today that the whereabouts of trade unionists detained on May 2 was still unknown.
Sores of arrests took place at a social gathering in the Karaj suburb of West Tehran, where trade unionists and their families had gathered to privately celebrate May Day.
Metalworkers and Mechanics Union leading member Maziar Gillaninejad was beaten, along with a number of trade unionists and their families, before being arrested and transferred to an unknown detention centre.
The event was completely legal, but this did not stop security forces throwing a cordon around the area and detaining attendees.
While many of those held in an earlier wave of arrests on May Day have been released due to internal and external pressure, those taken into custody on May 2 remain under threat.
The situation of Mr Gilaninejad, an effective and high-profile trade union organiser, is very worrying, said Codir.
Mr Gilaninejad edits Message of Syndicates, a publication with support from five trade unions.
Security services actions around May Day once again undermine claims of President Rouhani that his government was one of reform, said Codir.
Assistant general secretary jamshid Ahmadi said: “We have seen an ongoing programme of arrests in recent weeks while prisoners’ protests against inhumane conditions in prison escalate.
“Hunger strikes are increasingly the response to intimidation and torture as those arrested become more desperate.
“We are calling on trade unionists in Britain and around the world to show solidarity by protesting to the regime.”
