Since assuming the senate seat previously occupied by Jon Kyl, there’s no denying that Jeff Flake has become an eager apprentice to John McCain. Right out of the election hatch, Flake joined McCain and a load of liberals as a pro-amnesty member of the Gang of Eight.
Now bi-partisan-stepping solo, he has united with far-left-wing Democrat U.S. Rep. Ann Kirkpatrick (CD-1) in opposing the ouster of Veterans Affairs Secretary Eric Shinseki —- breaking with the American Legion —- which has called for Shinseki’s resignation.
The group’s demand came after news of scandalous delays in medical treatments allowed dozens of our military veterans to die without receiving appropriate treatment for months, and in some cases, nearly 2 years. Allegations of coordinated cover-ups of this malpractice at the highest levels have resulted in Phoenix VA Health Care System Director Sharon Helman, Associate Director Lance Robinson and others being placed on administrative leave by Shinseki last week.
The American Legion, the nation’s largest veterans service group, cited a litany of complaints against the VA, noting everything from the agency’s notorious backlog and attempts to conceal the serious lack of treatment to indefensible bonuses to Sharon Helman.
This is the tastelessly cheery photo Flake felt was suitable to use in conjunction with a local radio talk show interview in which the facts of this tragic situation were being discussed. One of those appearing on the show was a mother who lost her veteran son to suicide after he went without necessary care. Other callers related the disgraceful facts regarding the impact of the negligence on their family members.
Delays in providing appropriate treatment were purposely hidden as part of a complex cost-cutting scheme set up by Veterans Affairs managers.
The buck stops at the top. Regardless of what Republicrat Flake and liberal Democrat Kirkpatrick think, Shinseki needs to go.
