Lie Down, Roll Over And Play Dead? No! ‘Nullify’ the NSA, Reset the Net…

(Before It's News)

There’s a Hole in the NSA’S Surveillance Net – Climb Through HERE for Privacy:

The NSA is exploiting weak links in Internet security to spy on the entire world, twisting the Internet we love into something it was never meant to be: a panopticon.

  • Mass government surveillance has twisted our basic right to privacy – It’s time to take it back!

  • We can’t stop targeted attacks, but we *can* stop mass surveillance, by building proven security into the everyday Internet.

If you have a website (or a mobile app!) run the “Reset the Net” splash screen in protest on June 5th, to take a stand for privacy and to start making mass surveillance too hard for any government.

We’re still working on it, but here’s an outline of what we’re shooting for.

Code for the splash screen is still under development (mockups coming soon!) but here’s what it’ll do:

  1. Look awesome.

  2. Announce that you’re participating in Reset the Net

  3. Let users enter their email to get a [privacy pack] of free software tools that make end-to-end encryption easy, as well as some tips for protecting themselves.

  4. We’ll give visitors in the US an opportunity to contact their members of Congress, to say why they’re taking steps to protect the Internet, and that lawmakers have been too slow to act. If you have an action in another country you’d like us to link to, be in touch.

  5. It’ll be mobile friendly. Apps can do a push notification with a simple URL that takes users to a mobile friendly page.

We decided to only offer free software (or “open source”) tools in the privacy packs because they let any outsider verify (and improve) their security. Given how the US government induced once-private tools like Skype to add backdoors, we feel that’s important. It also narrows the choices a lot to ensure we aren’t seen as playing favorites. Read more about the privacy pack here.

Don’t worry! If you’ve got an app that isn’t free software, you can still participate and get listed on our front page. You’re a hero and you’re doing great work! (Though do realize that it will be harder for people to trust your security now that governments are pressuring developers to add backdoors.)

Are you a designer or animator? Would you like to help us make the splash screen awesome? Be in touch.

Can your site run the splash screen? Email us now, or sign up on Reset the Net.
