Mexico’s Cuaron Says He Has No New Projects Lined up Following “Gravity” Success

Mexican filmmaker Alfonso Cuaron, who won the Oscar for best director for “Gravity,” said that at present he has no plans “of any kind” to make a new movie.

“My near-term plans over the coming months are to take my kids to school and plan what I’m going to do this summer with them. Now, I’m once again connecting with life, I have no plans of any kind,” Cuaron told Efe in the Italian town of Pietrasanta in Tuscany.

U.S. media reported in recent days the possibility that Cuaron might direct the Harry Potter spinoff saga “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them,” which is currently in the pre-production phase.

“It was a very beautiful experience for me. I have a lot of love for that universe and I tremendously admire J.K. Rowling, but today, for the present, projects based around lots of visual effects don’t attract me. I’m coming out of a five-year process of doing visual effects and now I sort of want to clean my palate of that a little bit,” the director said.

But the rumors have not only been pointing to the new film set in the Harry Potter world, but they have also fingered Cuaron this weekend as one of the candidates to direct the prequel of “The Shining,” to be produced by Warner Bros.

Cuaron said he is “a big fan” of the film directed by Stanley Kubrick in 1980, but he said that he’s not up to date with the news saying that he would be a possible director for the prequel, which will be called “The Overlook Hotel.”

The Mexican moviemaker is spending some time in Pietrasanta, where his children live and where on Saturday he attended the conclusion of the Lapidarium exhibit featuring the work of his countryman, sculptor Gustavo Aceves.
