Miami Hosts Tech Summit for Latin American Mayors

Mayors of Latin American cities participated in a summit on technological innovation in Miami Beach, where they emphasized the main challenges facing municipalities in the areas of efficiency and the introduction of new technologies.

The first “Pro-Innovation” summit, sponsored by Miami-Dade County, sought to strengthen cooperation among the top officials of different cities in Latin America, the United States and Europe with an eye toward dealing with some of the problems facing municipalities in Latin America.

With this forum, the county is seeking to establish itself as the engine driving “the business of technology” in the cities of Latin America and the rest of the world, Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Gimenez told Efe.

“It’s a good way to see how we can connect with each of the cities to achieve different solutions,” the mayor said.

Presented at the summit on Saturday were several innovation projects, such as “Ruta N,” a proposal using public and private funds to “promote the development of innovative businesses.”

According to the project’s executive director, Juan Camilo Quintero, the fact that public entities exist that stimulate the implementation of new technologies means that municipalities “are increasing their competitiveness” by transforming themselves into “smart cities.”

The mayor of the Colombian city of Barranquilla, Elsa Noguera, said that the launching of this summit “generates spaces of reflection surrounding the importance of technology” in the management of cities and in current society.

The summit was held within the framework of the eMerge Americas Techweek conference, a fair held in Miami that is seeking to establish itself as a key gathering for dealing with various aspects of innovation in Latin America.
