Did you know cave men were living in Texas as early as 10,000 B.C.? I didn’t. Round Rock, Texas, home to one of these prehistoric tribes, is a beautiful hamlet straddling the Balcones Escarpment with one of the country’s fastest growing economies.
Unfortunately, Texas’ drug policies are also prehistoric and draconian. The state still has mandatory minimum sentences for mere marijuana possession, and remains one of America’s worst places to get nabbed with nug.
Texas’ drug laws are such schizophrenic and absurdly harsh drug laws that now, a man faces life in jail: for making pot brownies with cannabis extract.
Jacob Lovaro is this most recent victim of Texas’ dysfunction. He was recently arrested for producing edibles using hash oil, a substance which is highly illegal in the lone star state. Possession of less than a single gram can land you in jail for 180 days.
Jacob, who had approximately 660 grams of this widely used concentrate is now facing 5 years to life in prison. Of course some of the hype surrounding his case is just that (word has yet to be released whether prosecutors will pursue the maximum penalty) but the fact that Jacob’s sentence is on par with that of murderers is enough to make a sane man’s blood boil.
The reaction across the state has been one of mild outrage. Keye TV, a subsidiary of CBS television, interviewed locals about Jacob’s case.
Local Miren Tyler said, “That’s a lot!”, before her friend Paige Hanson chimed in observing, “that’s a pretty big sentence.”
Pretty big indeed.
