The United States’ space agency NASA recently announced the futuristic spacesuit that its astronauts would wear on the agency’s upcoming missions to the Moon and Mars.
A few weeks back, NASA had launched its Z-2 spacesuit design challenge, in which it asked the public to vote on three design prototypes. The design prototype that received the maximum number of votes looks like a suit from futuristic action movie “Tron: Legacy.”
The Z-2 “Technology” prototype, which garnered 63 per cent of the votes, is a suit of gray color with glowing turquoise symbols on the upper & lower torso. A section of the torso covered in a hard composite material.
It is the first spacesuit to be equipped with electroluminescent wiring, which is expected to protect the wearer against potential hazards like snags, scratches as well as micrometeorite strikes.
NASA has plans to start testing the $4.4-million spacesuit in fall this year.
As the name suggest the Z-2 is the second suit in the space agency’s developmental platform called the Z-series, which the first initiative to totally redesign the space agency’s spacesuit in three decades.
The following are a few of the space suit designs that failed to garner as many votes as the Z-2 space suit pictured above.
