Documentaries have a power that movies only aspire to: they can educate and inform the public, but also can shock and amaze. Documentaries can show the world as it is, with its horrifying parts. It is something more powerful than any Hollywood production. Therefore, you have here ten of the most shocking documentaries in the world, that you really need to watch.

 

10. The Bridge (2006)

Eric Steel’s documentary is shocking because contains authentic footage of people dying. The film about the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco is a film about suicides. Several suicides were captured on tape while the documentary was filmed. The filming process took one year, time that allowed the crew to see several people jumping into their deaths. The crew didn’t try to stop the jumpers, but they called 911 every time they saw it. Also, it was almost impossible to do it, since most of them didn’t show their intentions before the fatal plunge. The film shows also interviews with the families of the suicide victims, trying to find an explanation of why people decide to dye on this famous bridge. It is disturbing to watch several people killing themselves, but otherwise the doc is great.

 

9. Earthlings (2005)

Earthlings, directed by Shaun Monson, is one of the most intense documentaries about animal rights ever made. The director used hidden cameras in order to show the truth about what is really happening inside laboratories, pet shops, animal shelters and abattoirs. Many notable vegans as Joaquin Phoenix, Moby and Maggie Q collaborated for the film, which presents extreme images of animals being abused or killed all around the world.

 

8. 102 Minutes that Changed America (2008)

This documentary contains primarily amateur videos that show what really happened on September 11 2001 in New York City, after the first plane hit the World Trade Center until the two twin towers collapsed. This is the only documentary about the attack that shows the atmosphere at the Ground Zero, through people’s eyes, revealing what they saw and how they felt about it. You will see in the film that people didn’t realize what happened from the beginning and how they changed when discovered that New York is under attack.

 

7. The Hammer Maniacs (2010)

This Chilean documentary presents three of the most sadistic and horrifying serial killers in the world’s history: three Ukrainian teenagers called the Dnepropetrovsk Maniac. They were charged with 21 murders in 2007. The boys were even filming some of them, like the brutal slaying of 48 years old Sergei Yatzenko which became viral on the Internet under the name “3Guys1Hammer”. The film tries to explore the mind of these three criminals. Be aware: it shows real footage from the murder videos.

 

6. Into the Abyss (2011)

This documentary, directed by the legendary Wener Hertzog, present the story of a triple homicide that happened in Conroe, Texas. Two men were convicted for this crime: Jason Burkett – life sentence and Michael Perry – death penalty. The film is trying to focus on the criminals and their life in prison, presenting interviews with them, the prison officers and the law enforcement and the victims’ families. After watching the doc, everybody should ask themselves what do they think about the capital punishment.
