eBay is one of the most popular platforms on the web where people go to sell and buy goods. Found in 1995, eBay changed the way people buy on the Internet. With time passing, people got confidence in the platform and more and more items were sold every year. But the growing confidence convinced people also to sell and buy more expensive items. Artists and VIPs started to buy things on eBay, but also to sell goods they don’t use anymore. From private jets to space rocks, let’s see the most expensive items ever sold on eBay.
10. Samuel Allsopp’s Arctic Ale – $503.300
This rare bottle of beer was sold on eBay not only once, but twice, in 2007. The Artic Ale was brewed especially in 1852 for Sir Edward Belcher, who left to an Arctic Expedition. The beer was sealed and had a handwritten note, explaining the history of the bottle and the brewing process. The original seller misspelled the name of the beer and uploaded some imagines on eBay. He sold it for just $304 to another seller. But the buyer knew what he got and present the beer with a proper description, selling it later for half million dollars.
9. Shoeless Joe’s Baseball Bat – $577.610
A baseball bat used by Shoeless Joe Jackson was sold on eBay with more than half million dollars. Jackson is one of the baseball players who was involved in 1919 Chicago Black Sox game fixing scandal. The baseball bat, named “Black Betsy”, was sold by his nephew in 2011. It has been used by the player between 1908 and 1929. After it was sold, “Black Betsy” became the most expensive baseball bat in the world.
8. Ferrari Enzo – $650.000
The Enzo Ferrari is a 12 cylinder mid-engine berlinetta named after its founder, Enzo Ferrari. The Enzo’s V12 engine is the first of a new generation for Ferrari. It is based on the architecture of the V8 found in sister-company Maserati’s Quattroporte. There are only 399 Ferrari Enzo in the world, so when this supercar appeared on eBay in 2004, the auction got crazy. The 12-cylinder race-car was built in the honor of Enzo Ferrari, the founder of the company. The minimum price to buy an Enzo today is $1 million. The bidder who bought the car was from Switzerland and he bet only $55 more than the previous bidder. Car collectors think this price was a straight-up steal.
7. A baseball card – $1.1 million
Brian Seigel, a baseball card collector, paid $1.1 million for one of the most famous cards in the world: T206 Honus Wagner. Wagner is one of the all-time greatest baseball players. Seigel bought the card in 2000 and he paid such a huge amount because this baseball card is extremely rare; only 200 pieces were produced and distributed in the American Tobacco Company cigarettes in 1909 and just 57 of them still exist. Experts consider this baseball card a rarity and a legend.
6. Bridgeville, California – $1.77 million
Yes, that is right. Somebody sold on eBay an entire town. Bridgeville is an unincorporated community in Humboldt County, California, 420 km north of San Fransisco and has a population of 25. It happened in 2002 and at that time the town had only 30 residents. For $1.77 million, the buyer got an 83-acre town, with eight houses, a post office and a café. Unfortunately, it wasn’t such a good deal and in 2006, the owner, the banker Bruce Krall, decided to sell it again. It was bought for $1.25 million by a 25-year-old college student, but he committed suicide in Los Angeles in a couple of months after the transaction.
