Back in 2011, the Central Intelligence Agency set up a bogus hepatitis vaccination program in Pakistan as part of the ‘hunt for Osama Bin Laden’. In layman’s terms, the US government admitted that they covertly stole DNA samples from the public as part of their shameful ‘war on terror’ to identify suspected terrorists.
In response to this revelation, frustrated public health officials who heard about the admitted espionage project taking place wrote to the White House,
“While political and security agendas may by necessity induce collateral damage, we as a society set boundaries on these damages, and we believe this sham vaccination campaign exceeded those damages,” the educators’ letter stated in an article posted by the NY Times.
Soon after, the Obama administration wrote back, stating that the agency no longer uses immunization programs as a cover for spying operations. Obama’s senior counterterrorism adviser said the C.I.A. had now banned the practice of making “operational use” of vaccination programs, adding that the agency would not seek to “obtain or exploit DNA or other genetic material acquired through such programs.”
