Virgin Atlantic glass-bottomed plane

Owner Virgin Atlantic Airways

Im thrilled to announce that Virgin has created another world-first with the introduction of the technology required to produce the worlds first glass-bottomed plane. This technological innovation coincides with the start of Virgin Atlantic Airways first ever domestic service to Scotland.

In 1984 we started the wonderful airline that is Virgin Atlantic. I am incredibly proud of yet another aviation breakthrough which has been years in the making. I cant wait to experience the first flight for myself with my family and other natural born explorers.

2012 was a year of celebrating what is brilliant about Great Britain and Im excited that in 2013 we are continuing this uplifting spirit by developing an experience that will enable Little Red passengers to appreciate the beauty of the British landscape. And with an unrivalled view of Scotland I hope this gives Scottish tourism an even bigger boost.

We hope to trial the glass bottom technology with other Virgin airlines in time and have asked other Virgin companies to support this innovative trial and launch our new domestic Scottish route. This really is a team effort from all corners of Virgin.
Will we spot Nessie from our glass-bottomed plane? Following Richard Branson’s announcement of the world’s first ever glass-bottomed plane, the Virgin companies have been rallying to support this latest technological innovation from Virgin Atlantic.
The Virgin companies took to Twitter (#VirginGlassPlane) to speculate what might happen if passengers onboard the glass-bottomed plane were to spot the Loch Ness Monster after one of the UK’s major national newspapers, The Mirror, reported that special permission had been granted for Virgin Atlantic to fly low over Loch Ness to take in the stunning Scottish scenery.
Virgin Balloon Flights said they’d introduce glass-bottomed baskets for Scottish flights, Virgin Active declared it would host diving classes for would-be dinsoaur hunters to prepare for a Loch Ness dive, while Virgin Experience Days said they would host ‘Spot Nessie’ diving experiences.

Virgin Trains said they’d paint a giant Nessie on one of their Scotland-bound trains for airborne passengers to spot and Virgin Wines suggested a nice glass of their exclusive Merloch wine could be served onboard.

Determined not to let anyone who wouldn’t be able to make it to Scotland miss out on all the fun, Virgin Media announced it would live stream ‘Nessie Vision’ direct from the Loch on TiVo and Virgin TV Anywhere, all year.
The last word goes to The Mirror who reported that ‘if the service takes off, more glass floor jets will be introduced from April 1, 2014′.
