Weed to Soon Become More Accepted Than Wine
A new study indicates that marijuana is on its way to becoming America’s mainstream party favor, and that the majority of consumers believe weed is destined to become a part of everyday life.
A recent survey conducted by online legal forum Avvo discovered that recreational marijuana is becoming a household name in the green states of Colorado and Washington, with over 70 percent of the 2,200 respondents claiming that pot will soon be as ordinary to see at dinner parties as a bottle of wine.
In fact, the survey found that residents of Colorado and Washington are excited to see pot shopsbeing established in their communities — 67-percent in Colorado and 71 percent in Washington, respectively.
However, it appears as though some of the anti-pot propaganda has been successful. Some respondents say they still have concerns about emerging, new pot businesses: 43 percent claim they are worried about children having greater access to marijuana, while 42 percent fear legal weed will lead to an insurgence of stoned driving. Less than 30 percent are worried about an increase in crime.
Just last week, Public Policy Polling reported similar results; finding that while there is still some resistance to legalized marijuana in Colorado, more people seem to be getting used to the idea. Washington State is expected to suffer similar growing pains when it finally begins selling recreational marijuana later this year.
“As the growing number of states with marijuana-legalization ballot initiatives indicates, pot is gaining social acceptance across a wide swath of demographics, even with shared concerns about kids having great access to the drug,” Leigh McMillan, vice president of marketing & research, Avvo, Inc. said in a recent press release. “Somewhat akin to the social movement after the end of prohibition, legalized marijuana will likely follow a similar trajectory as cannabis becomes socially accepted and new businesses emerge.”
