Brazil’s Unemployment Rise to 7.1 Percent

Unemployment in Brazil rose to 7.1 percent in the first quarter, the Brazilian Geography and Statistics Institute, or IBGE, reported Tuesday.

The jobless rate climbed 0.9 percent compared with the last three months of 2013.

The average number of people who were employed between January and March of this year was 91.2 million, down 0.65 percent from the fourth quarter of 2013.

IBGE’s new quarterly household survey is broader and more detailed than the earlier one, entitled the “Monthly Study of Employment,” which takes as its sample the country’s six largest metropolitan regions.

The monthly indicator put April’s jobless rate at 4.9 percent, the lowest rate for that month in the last 12 years.

Both statistical measures are calculated by IBGE and both are considered to be official. They will coexist up until December 2015, when the monthly study will cease being published.

As measured by the new indicator, in the first quarter of 2014 the level of workforce participation was 68.3 percent among men and 46.2 percent among women. EFE
