Heavy Rains, Wind Affects 8,000 in Chile

More than 8,000 people have been affected, roads made impassable and basic services cut off in central and southern Chile by a wind- and rainstorm, according to authorities.

The National Emergencies Office, or Onemi, reported on Tuesday evening that at least 4,000 people in assorted towns were cut off by rising waters in several rivers and canals throughout the region.

A similar number of people suffered property damage from the heavy winds and landslides.

In addition, more than 50,000 homes are without electricity in the southern regions of Biobio, La Araucania, Los Rios and Los Lagos.

So far, classes have been suspended in the towns of Puerto Varas, Puerto Montt and Calbuco, among others, while firefighters and municipal officials are helping a number of families who have lost the roofs of their homes.

According to the Weather Service, the storm front will affect the region from Coquimbo in the north to the southern city of Punta Arenas.
