The Eat Right for Your Blood Type diet encourages people to eat certain foods and avoid others based on their blood type: A, B, AB or O. Read on to see how it would apply to you and your blood type:
Peter D’Adamo, a naturopathic doctor and the author of Eat Right for Your Type: The Individualized Diet Solution to Staying Healthy, Living Longer & Achieving Your Ideal Weight, believes blood types affect our digestive systems and says that some food groups which maybe good for people of one blood type can be “dangerous” for another(i). He also believes that your blood type can determine your susceptibility to certain illnesses and even how you should exercise.
Critics cite a lack of published evidence backing Dr D’Adamo’s blood type-based diet plan but with more than 7 million copies of his book being sold it clearly works for some.
WHAT IS THE BLOOD TYPE DIET?
D’Adamo’s theory is that every one of us responds differently to certain food types and that is related to our blood type. He says the basis is that lectins (which are carbohydrate-binding proteins) cause different interactions for each different blood type. If certain lectins interact with certain blood type related antigens it could have harmful effects on your health.
Of course D’Adamo goes in to great depth in his book regarding the theory behind his claims but the detailes diet basically specifies which foods should be eaten by which blood types and in which proportions.
THE FOUR BASIC BLOOD TYPES:
1. TYPE O – D’Adamo says this is probably the oldest blood type and can be dated back more than 30,000 years. He calls this group ‘the hunters’ and they require more protein than the other blood types.
