While at the movies with my friend Michelle and her two daughters, two of Michelle’s neighbors noticed police officers circling the neighborhood. A few minutes later, the neighbors noticed that one of the police officers had parked their car across the street, opened the driver door of my truck, and were standing inside. When they questioned what was going on, because both neighbors are familiar with my car and knew we were out together, the officer said the door was unlocked and matched a description of a stolen car in the area. The officers were said to be searching my car.
When we went back to the house after the movies, there was a “courtesy note” left on the window saying my car was unlocked. I called the phone number listed on the paper to get more information. I felt very violated. When I called, the police officer was immediately rude, saying I was assuming the officers were going through my stuff without consent, but this was exactly how I felt. The officer on the phone said, “Well, weren’t your doors were unlocked? What if someone was hiding in the back of your car?” This was not a concern of mine. I felt comfortable where my car was parked and obviously I had neighbors looking out for my car when I was absent.
Finally, I was given the story that there was a stolen vehicle around the corner, and out of this vehicle there were keys stolen. These keys matched the description of my vehicle. In my opinion, this does not mean my vehicle matched a description of a stolen car, nor does it give the police a reason to even try to see if my doors are open. Please help, because I personally do not feel like this was appropriate reason to open my car door. Nothing was stolen, but knowing that someone invaded my personal property and home has made me more scared about living out of my car in the first place, especially with it being by the police.
