The northeastern Brazilian city of Natal, site of Monday’s World Cup match between the United States and Ghana, has turned into a disaster area due to the torrential rains flooding the municipality over the past few days.
Municipal organizations have been legally authorized to call for volunteers to help collect funds, provide quicker action in the work of containing floodwaters and lend a hand with whatever else needs to be done.
Around 50 homes were evacuated in Natal because of the flooding that hit the city over the past week, according to official sources.
Last Friday, the day of the match between Mexico and Cameroon, as much rain fell in a single day as was forecast for a month.
The match between the United States and Ghana, to begin at 7:00 p.m. in the Arena das Dunas stadium, will be attended by U.S. Vice President Joe Biden, who traveled to Brazil to support his country’s national squad.
