The Miami-Dade County Commission has approved a plan to build a museum dedicated to the Cuban exile, whose history has been linked to the city for more than half a century.
The proposed site is on Biscayne Bay.
County Mayor Carlos Gimenez will have three months to present a viability study for the project, criticized by some community spokespersons who demand that the waterfront site be made into a park instead.
The plot of land where the museum will be built is located next to the American Airlines Arena, practically the same place where retired soccer star David Beckham hoped to build a stadium for his sport, though in the end he was unable to carry out the project.
The cost of the museum, which could be more than $100 million, will be financed with private funds.
Home to more than 2.5 million residents, Miami-Dade County is a metropolitan area that over the past 55 years has been the preferred destination for Cubans fleeing the Castro dictatorship.
