For the longest time, I have resisted accepting money for advertising on Sustainable Man. I’ve had tons of offers – many from eco-conscious brands – who have offered to pay me to promote their products or services. And I do need the money as my savings from my previous corporate job have run out. But today I have decided for sure – I will not enter into any contract to accept money to advertise anything on Sustainable Man. This is why.
The first reason is that the idea of accepting money to tell people things that I already want to tell them goes against my intuition. When I think about accepting money to promote something, my gut tightens up and, personally, I feel disgusted. I have learned that when things don’t sit well, it is time to meditate to attempt to uncover the reasons why I feel uneasy about the idea. It turns out there was a lot that I didn’t like about the idea of paid advertising.
Let’s forget for a moment that the purpose of almost all advertising is to promote yet another product or service that individuals buy, usually for themselves. And most of the people who are buying these products or services don’t really need them. I mean, does anybody really need a t-shirt with the Sustainable Man logo on it? Is marketing products the only way to fund an idea or business?
