3 Die in Shootout in Central Mexico

Three people, including a police officer, died in a shootout triggered by an attempt to steal an automobile in the central Mexican city of Ecatepec, media reports said.

The shootout took place Saturday afternoon on Central avenue in Ecatepec, a city in Mexico state, which surrounds the Federal District and forms part of the Mexico City metropolitan area, the El Universal newspaper reported.

The armed robber tried to steal an automobile, but the driver resisted and was shot dead.

The assailant tried to drive away from the crime scene after being spotted by a police patrol car, but he ended up crashing.

The robber opened fire on the two officers in the patrol car, killing one of them.

The other officer returned fire and killed the suspect.
