Here are 7 reasons why we should stop morning Robin Williams and thinking of him as a good role model:
While I am not outright condemning people who have mental illnesses, it is a clear cut sign of weakness and deficiency when one chooses to succumb to one in the way Williams did. His actions show children that not only is it okay to be broken, but it’s okay to not get the help you need for your illness. If you are suffering from a mental illness, I urge you to not become complacent with the hand you were dealt. Seek resources that will provide you with the professional help you need to get better. Furthermore, a Role Model should be a fully capable, well rounded individual whom children can look up to and aspire to be when they grow up.
Young people have always been an impressionable crowd. They’re always on the lookout for some hot new trend to jump in on. It has been an ongoing battle for decades, for both parents and children alike, to avoid the allure of suicide. While many teens these days tend to commit suicide to be remembered as “cool,” or to be the “first of their friends to do it,” some have legitimate reasons such as hormones going awry due to puberty and the illusion that they’re “depressed.” Now that Robin Williams, an apparent “national treasure,” has chosen to leave this world via suicide, I suspect a large number of trendy teens will follow in his foot step. It is a well known fact that suicide is a sin, and anyone who chooses to take their own lives will spend the rest of eternity in hell. Therefore, for this reason alone, I find it disgusting that one would idol worship a celebrity who is effectively sendingchildren to hell.
I personally have immense respect for Williams in regards to his charity work, so this is only a minor criticism. God wants us to put him in every action we do during out time spent on Earth. Williams was in a position of great power and influence, and could have brought many, many souls to Christ. Instead, he elected to create charities that focused on secular goals, such as the Comedic Relief fundraising effort, donations to the Red Cross, and a performance for US troops in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Again, I’m bringing it back to the suicide issue. Any good Christian knows that suicide is a sin, and you will be turned away by God when your soul ascends. Any good role model would be as steadfast as possible in their faith in God, to serve as a beacon and an example to everyone watching their behavior. His actions says to children that the commandments in the Bible do not apply to him, that they’re unimportant, and that they may live their lives in sin with potentially no recourse.
