A gun instructor in Arizona has been accidentally shot and killed by a nine-year-old girl he was teaching to fire an automatic Uzi submachine gun.
Charles Vacca, 39, was killed on Monday after being shot in the head at an outdoor shooting range in White Hills. The accident happened when the girl, who authorities said had been taken to the range by her parents, pulled the trigger and the recoil sent the gun over her head.
Vacca was standing next to the girl, who had fired the weapon a number of times in the “single-shot” mode, authorities said, but when it was switched into “fully-automatic” the weapon recoiled as the girl fired the trigger. V acca died shortly after being airlifted to University Medical Center in Las Vegas, Mohave County sheriff’s office said.
Ronald Scott, a firearms safety expert, said most shooting ranges have an age limit and strict safety rules when teaching children to shoot. He said instructors usually have their hands on guns when children are firing high-powered weapons.
“You can’t give a 9-year-old an Uzi and expect her to control it,” he said.
The girl has not been named, and it is not known if the Last Stop range had an age limit or if the girl was going through a safety class.
Mohave County Sheriff’s officials released a video, reportedly shot by the child’s parents, showing the moments leading up to Vacca’s death.
FULL AUTO handed to a 9 year old???
Well, that just cleaned some STUPID out of the gene pool!
What the heck ever happed to using .22′s to teach youngsters safety and shooting skills with?
What happened to pellet guns???
The UZI is not on full auto and the sound appears to be added in. We see one round fired downrange and only one smoke burst. We can also see the instructors left gloved hand on the weapon so how could it turn when this action is exactly what an instructor is there to control? Listen to the sound burst and notice the lack of muzzle smoke to correspond. This story warrants a full independent investigation.
It says:
(the girl, who had fired the weapon a number of times in the “single-shot” mode, authorities said, but when it was switched into “fully-automatic” the weapon recoiled as the girl fired the trigger.)
I went to the other site and did not find a VIDEO or a link to one there or here… You must have a better computer than I have…
ALSO it said:
(a video, reportedly shot by the child’s parents, showing “the moments leading up to” Vacca’s death.)
It says nothing about the parents actually videoing the girl firing the UZI after being switched to full auto… So since I can’t find the video you said you watched, I will not read into the words of the article MORE than is there… Hmmm wonder why the video isn’t showing up on my screen too?
Anon,
Watch it here and watch several times. It doesn’t not look right. If you have ever shot an automatic weapon, you know that there is a lot more smoke than this. I only see one smokeburst like the auto sound has been added in. We should also see a trail of bullets climbing the hill to the left. We see only one.

A gun range instructor with no visible ear protection? This doesn’t look right. Watch his body. There is absolutely no movement as the weapon turns toward him and that should be his main concern at that point. There is indication of only one round fired. On fully automatic, there should be considerably more smoke.
They are called “ear-plugs” and are used in place of the standard ear muff type hearing protection and as the video does not contain the actual clip of the shooting, seems your lack of knowledge with regard to equipment extends to other areas like reading comprehension.
As an NRA certified Firearms Instructor for more than 30 years I am embarrassed to be associated with this incident and while I seek to avoid speaking ill of the dead here; “IF” Mr. Vacca had been more familiar with the bolt operating characteristics of the family of Uzi firearms he would not have placed himself in this situation. Uzis operate with a heavy bolt and the pistol variants have significant torque upon firing, only those with the proper hand-strength and technique should be allowed to handle such a pistol.
More common-sense and SAFETY and this incident would have never taken place.
I am sorry for Mr. Vacca’s family.
DwnRange,
I have a set of ear plugs, the type you can hear a voice but suppress loud shots. They are quite long and stick out of my ears. When you enlarge the photo of this instructor, I see no earplugs what so ever. Do you?
DwnRange has identified itself as a shill using the usual tactics to immediately make a personal attack on anyone who points out discrepancies. Notice how he or she never addressed the rebuttal to his ridiculous justifications. Once again, if recoil causes the gun muzzle to rise up while rapidly firing a string of bullets, why does this video not show a trail of bullets climbing the hill? And what is with the target jumping up and down?
This video looks and sounds staged to me. After all, the very reason that this instructor is in contact with the girl is that so he can control where the weapon is pointing.
If I were the victim’s family I’d sue the girl’s parents for such a humonguous amount – they’d be out in the street in time flat. Talk about irresponsible parenting.
Please see my comments above; Mr. Vacca was the responsible party here, HE was the Instructor – it was his lack of understanding of the weapon, common-sense and safety that ultimately lead to this unfortunate death.
UZI AUTO 9yr old. REALLY? How about some common sense folks? I can’t take much more of this…has everyone gone insane?
This range needs some real scrutiny. How is it that they have a fully automatic UZI? I thought they were illegal to posses in this country. I know that I certainly am not allowed to own one nor a fully automatic weapon of any kind. This whole story stinks to high heaven.
