JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — First Coast News received multiple messages in social media Wednesday from concerned viewers asking about an ominous photo floating around social media sites.
The graphic image titled ‘The Purge’ reads “Get Your Squad Ready” and gives a date of midnight on August 31. An image of a creepy smiling man along with smaller images of a knife and a gun are also seen in the graphic.
The image is of a character from The Purge, a 2013 American action horror thriller film where people have a 12-hour period when all crimes become legal. The Purge was also the theme for last year’s Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Studios.
One FCN Facebook member shared the photo with us and wrote, “There are a lot of concerned parents about the attachment I am sending. There are groups of gangs sharing this on the internet.”
“Don’t want my name out there but this [photo] is all over Facebook and people are actually thinking it’s real. You have any idea what this is about,” another FCN Facebook user wrote in a message.
Jacksonville Sheriff John Rutherford caught wind of the concerns and put out a statement Wednesday evening. Rutherford said there is “no credible information to indicate that this is a legitimate threat to the city of Jacksonville.”
His full statement reads:
The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office takes all threats (or perceived threats) including those posted on social media, seriously. We are aware of The Purge posting (based on the fiction contained in a movie) and are looking into this. Obviously, we will not discuss tactics, but as with any perceived threat, we appreciate the assistance of the public in passing that along to us. Read more

‘The Purge’ is a movie set in the future where for 12 hours, all criminal activity including murder is legal. While the scenario is complete fiction, concern from parents about a social media post is very real.
On Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter, you can see a “purge” date has been set for Jacksonville.
“They say that it’s going to be Aug. 31,” said gang interventionist Ivan Brown.
He’s been working to keep local kids out of gangs for years. But this latest social media trend has him concerned.
“They are out to hurt people, maim people, possibly some may kill,” he said.
Action News did some digging and found threats of a purge have also circulated in other cities like Cleveland, St. Louis and Pittsburgh, with no outbreaks of crime or violence related to the social media posts.
However, Brown said gang activity in Jacksonville is on the rise. He says criminals are starting young and have no fear of authority.
“Kids shoot at police now,” he said. “So no, they’re not afraid of the police anymore.”
Brown said it’s more than just a movie to them. It’s a commitment to chaos.
“Just be aware of what’s going on around you because they’re not playing. They are serious,” he said.
Jacksonville Sheriff John Rutherford issued a statement about the social media post, saying JSO is aware of the post and that it takes all threats seriously. However, he said there is no credible information at this time to indicate that this is a legitimate threat. Read more

Heavily armed SWAT police trained their guns on the public and fired tear gas in Ferguson, Missouri, last night as racial unrest over the fatal shooting of an unarmed black teen rocked the St. Louis suburb for the fourth night running.
An estimated 500 people, who had been protesting 18-year-old Michael Brown’s death on Saturday, ignored the night curfew imposed by police and instead faced-off against officers chanting ‘Hands Up! Don’t Shoot!’
After repeatedly asking them to disperse, the riot police then fired tear gas into the crowd to break it up, causing scenes that resembled a war zone as another night of clashes was sparked between authorities and furious protestors.
The protestors that remained entered into pitched street battles with police and lobbed Molotov cocktails at the camouflage-clad officers who responded with more tears gas and smoke bombs although there were no immediate reports of injuries but at least 18 arrests.
There were no immediate reports of injuries from the violence but later on Thursday, an image was posted to an Instagram account by ‘tef_poe’ showing a middle-aged lady, identified as a Pastor of America, who had been praying when she was hit with a rubber bullet.
The rubber bullet left a bloody wound ringed with dark bruising on the woman’s abdomen.
A caption next to the image read: ‘For all those who think this is a joke or think we are being irrational, this lady is a pastor she was praying when they shot her.’
Missouri Governor Jay Nixon cancelled all appearances on Wednesday night and visited Ferguson on Thursday.
This comes as St. Louis Alderman, Antonio French, was arrested by police during the unrest on Wednesday night in Ferguson after he didn’t listen to police, according to his wife.
Senka French took to Twitter to confirm that the popular politician was ordered out of his car and taken into custody by police and it is not clear what he has been charged with yet.
