Atletico Defeats Real Madrid Thanks to Mandzukic
A goal by recent acquisition Mario Mandzukic just 80 seconds into Friday’s second leg of the Spanish Super Cup gave Atletico Madrid a 2-1 aggregate win over Real Madrid.
Atleti’s second Super Cup is also the fifth title of coach Diego Simeone’s tenure with the club, including the 2013-2014 La Liga championship and the 2013 Copa del Rey.
The victory may also take a little bit of the sting out of the Colchoneros’ loss to 2014 Copa del Rey winner Real Madrid in the 2013-2014 Champions League final.
The Blancos and Atletico battled to a 1-1 tie in Tuesday’s first leg at Real’s Santiago Bernabeu stadium, with both goals coming in the final 10 minutes of regulation.
Though the talent-laden Real Madrid squad provided some exciting moments and generated a handful of chances on Friday, Atletico set the terms for the match.
Disdaining the strategy of playing for a scoreless draw and relying on its away goal to win, the Colchoneros decided the best defense was a good offense and continued to press even after Mandzukic’s early goal, to the delight of their 54,000 supporters at the Vicente Calderon.
Simeone was ejected in the 25th minute for arguing with the referee, while Real Madrid found itself down to 10 men in second-half extra time after Luka Modric was thrown on for a second yellow care in the 90th minute.
