Christine Jones’ benefactor ginning up her campaign war chest

As primary election campaigns slide into the final stretch, the governor’s race gets more pedal to the metal in the form of a mega amount of hard cash being infused into the gubernatorial coffers of Republican hopeful Christine Jones.

GoDaddy.com founder Bob Parsons, who sold his company for a cool $2.25 billion in July 2011, added another $1 million into an effort to help Jones, his company’s former corporate lawyer. She hasn’t been a piker, either. Jones donated $758,000. to her own campaign on Aug. 12.

Parsons, a controversial elephant killer, made the hefty donation to Better Leaders for Arizona, an independent campaign committee that supports Jones while zoning in on attacking another contender, Doug Ducey. The GOP primary is heavy with candidates: Ken Bennett, Doug Ducey, Frank Riggs, Scott Smith, Andrew Thomas, and Jones are all vying for the state’s top job. State Sen. Al Melvin dropped out June 23, after being unable to gain traction.
