A man suspected of running the financial affairs of a drug cartel in the northern Mexican state of Chihuahua was arrested over the weekend, the Government Secretariat said.
Enrique Hernandez Garcia was detained on Saturday, the secretariat said.
Hernandez Garcia was the subject of an arrest warrant issued on organized crime, drug and arms charges.
The secretariat, however, did not identify the drug cartel the suspect belonged to.
Hernandez Garcia was arrested in Ciudad Cuauhtemoc, thanks to intelligence work by the Defense Secretariat and the Federal Police, the secretariat said.
The suspect did not offer any resistance when he saw that he was surrounded, officials said.
Hernandez Garcia, who was carrying two firearms, is the brother of Francisco Hernandez Garcia, a fugitive suspected of being a regional boss of the same drug cartel, which operates in Coahuila, San Luis Potosi, Chihuahua and Sonora, the secretariat said.
Enrique Hernandez Garcia worked in Chihuahua, taking his orders from his brother and acting as a liaison with the Juarez cartel, which is run by Vicente Carrillo Fuentes, the secretariat said.
The suspect managed the money generated from drug sales in the United States.
Hernandez Garcia was turned over to the SIEDO organized crime unit of the federal Attorney General’s Office.
