Colombian Rebel Group Charged with Poisoning Solder

The Colombian army charged the ELN guerrilla group with the death of a soldier who ate poisoned meat.

Six other members of the 5th Mobile Brigade had to be hospitalized as a result of the “despicable act” in the northeastern province of Arauca, the command of the Quiron Task Force said in a statement.

The communique said the incident occurred on Saturday when troops deployed in a rural area near the town of Tame “bought meat for their meal from a man who turned out to be a member of the ELN disguised as a farm worker.”

It added that the soldiers were treated at a hospital in Tame, but one of them, Edwar Andres Salazar Beltran, 25, died from eating food full of rat poison.

Prosecutors in Arauca, who took over investigation of the case, sent samples of the poisoned food to a specialized laboratory where it will be analyzed by a team of experts to determine scientifically what caused the soldier’s death.

The media originally reported that eight soldiers were poisoned and that one died.

The National Liberation Army, or ELN, is the smaller of Colombia’s two main rebel groups.
