Tests are ongoing to find out which strain of Ebola has surfaced in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The country is so far reporting 13 deaths from the disease and health officials there say they are expecting many more.
There are five strains of Ebola:
Ebola Zaire is the strain currently circulating is West Africa, it is the most lethal of all strains with a fatality rate of up to 90%. The World Health Organization estimate the current West African outbreak to have a fatality rate of around 60%.
Ebola Reston is the least lethal of the five, all humans infected with Ebola Reston have recovered. The other three come in between with a fatality rate of 35-50% of those infected.
It would be unusual to find a second strain in such close proximity, geographically speaking, to the Ebola Zaire that is currently circulating the region. Lambert Mende, DRC Information Minister said on Monday that five of the dead were medical staff, one doctor and four nurses. (source)
In Liberia a doctor who received the experimental drug ZMapp has died. Three doctors were treated with the drug and early in the treatment they were said to be responding well. On Sunday however Lewis Brown, the Liberian Information Minister said that one of the three had died. He did not elaborate on the condition of the other two patients. Dr Borbor, the medic who succumbed to the disease was the second patient treated with ZMapp to die. Spanish priest Miguel Pajares died in Madrid earlier this month. Source
