Clearly the most famous ancient site in all of Peru, and the number one tourist destination in South America, this amazing place is rarely taught about in a full and clear manner. Let’s start with the name.

It is not called Machu Picchu; Machu, in the Inca language means “ancient” and Picchu means “penis.” Its proper pronunciation is Machu Pic’chu, (Machoo Peekchoo) which means “ancient mountain” and thus does not refer to the city itself.

machupicchuguide02American explorer Hiram Bingham III made the site famous in a 1913 article devoted entirely to Machu Pic’chu. However, he did not discover it, but was shown it via a 9 year old local child. Once they had climbed to the summit they discovered that 2 Peruvian families were living there, growing crops.

Both the National Geographic Society and Yale University financed Bingham’s archaeological work; they removed 30,000 artifacts to the US and only a few hundred have ever been returned…and no gold was found.
