He Was Crying, ‘Please Stop. Please Stop.’

(Before It's News)

On June 23, 2012 Darren Rainey, a 50-year-old mentally ill state prison inmate in Miami-Dade County, died after guards responded to his defecating in his cell by locking him into a 180-degree shower for two hours—at which point his skin was separating from his body.

Local police, and the state failed to properly investigate. The case was only brought to light in recent months by The Miami Herald.

After two years, no one has been held criminally accountable, or even charged.

Darren was serving a two-year sentence for drug possession and housed in a psychiatric unit. After his death, guards forced another prisoner, Mark Joiner, to clean up the shower where Darren died, including chunks of skin.

“He was crying, please stop, please stop, Joiner said. “And they just said, ‘Enjoy your shower,’ and left.”

Only the U.S. Department of Justice can properly investigate this terrible crime, and a broader culture of abuse in Florida’s prisons that has led to other unnecessary deaths, and which falls especially hard on the mentally ill.

There are 10 times more mentally ill Americans in prisons and jails than in state psychiatric hospitals.

Cutting Medicaid benefits in the face of the rising cost of health care services, led to some of the biggest cuts to state mental health care services in U.S. history between 2009 and 2011.

  • Who is really insane?

    • It don’t take a rocket scientist to figure that one out.

  • The guards steam boiled Darren Rainey to death by no less than criminal neglect.

Murder or manslaughter charges should be brought against the guards. And perhaps charges of participating in a murder/manslaughter after the fact against all those in authority, that knew and did nothing, or covered up the murder/manslaughter of Darren Rainey.

Not only is a federal investigation in order, Darren Rainey’s needs to file a federal law suite.

Mark Joiner’s family needs to file a federal law suite too. Mark Joiner should not have been made to participate in cleaning up a murder/manslaughter. He could have mental problems, or at least Post Traumatic Stress, the rest of his life having witnessed and made to take part in such an act. And, may have feared for his own life if he didn’t do what the guards told him to do.

Law suites for Mark Joiner and Darren Rainey need to be filed against any police or prosecutors, or others, that failed to act in the coverup of the death too.

    • TYPO: Not only is a federal investigation in order, Darren Rainey’s ‘FAMILY’ need to file a federal law suite.

  • Apparently they’ve been doing such things and worse to people in Florida detention for quite some time- Dozier reform school any one? Dozens & dozens of incarcerated young men brutally tortured to death over a period of decades at the hands of the state & statists…

    • Ever since the Mariel Boat Lift, Miami / Dade has been run by the criminally insane. Now its all of South Florida up to Palm Beach County.
I lived there. It’s frighteningly disgusting.
