Man Lives Off of Insects for 12 Days in Brazilian Jungle
A 65-year-old man lost in the Amazon jungle survived for 12 days eating insects like bees and flies, authorities of the northern state of Amazonas said.
Police said that Gileno Vieira da Rocha was found Tuesday by a peasant in the rainforest region of the Vila de Sucunduri municipality, 435 kilometers (270 miles) from Manaus, capital of the neighboring state of Para.
Rocha, an engineer who was working on the construction of grandstands at a sports field in Vila de Sucunduri, had an argument with local residents and, fearing reprisals, walked out of the hotel located on the Trans-Amazonian Highway and ended up getting lost in the jungle, police inspector Francisco Rocha told reporters.
The police inspector said the peasant found the engineer, unconscious and with cuts and scrapes infected by parasites, some 30 kilometers (19 miles) from the place where he was last seen.
Inspector Rocha said that despite his age, the engineer survived because he was a native of the Amazon region and “knew a thing or two about the jungle.”
After spending a day in hospital, where his injuries where treated and his stomach pumped because of the insects he had eaten, the engineer was released and is recovering at home, the inspector said.
