When tackling a list as audacious, slippery and fraught with diagnostic peril as “top ten greatest rock bands ever,” one can either fear in anticipation of the monsoon of arguments opposing the list or one can move ahead blissfully secure in the universal righteousness of one’s right to have their opinions heard. We here choose the latter. We begin this list with no.10, Bon Jovi.
Bon Jovi is a hard rock group formed in 1983. They sold 130 million albums worldwide. Although they have quite a lot of catching up to do to the other 9 bands on the list, they are moving in a positive direction. To date, they have done 2600 concerts in over 50 countries and won several awards in 1987, 1995, 1996 and 2010. Their song “It’s my Life” released in 2000 was No. 1 in a number of countries. It’s been performed in all of Bon Jovi’s concerts since the release.
Led Zeppelin is a mix of many genres – from heavy metal to folk. The London based band has several classic rock hits. It all started in 1968, with four members: Jimmy Page, Robert Plant, John Paul Jones and John Bonham. Releasing nine albums, this group gained popularity in the last 70′s and continued to 1980. From “Stairway to Heaven” to “Ramble On,” Led Zeppelin has set the record for rock and roll bands all across the world. Led Zeppelin have influenced hard rock and heavy metal bands such as Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, Rush, Queen, and Megadeth as well as progressive metal bands like Tool and Dream Theater. Throughout their active careers, Led Zeppelin have collected many honours and awards. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1995 and into the UK Music Hall of Fame in 2006. Among the band’s many awards are an American Music Award in 2005, and the Polar Music Prize in 2006. All I can say is that heavy metal would not exist without Led Zeppelin, and if it did, it would not so be interesting
U2 is an Irish rock band that was formed in 1976 by Bono, the Edge, Adam Clayton andLarry Mullen Jr. By the mid 1980s, U2 was a top international sensation. They’ve won 22 Grammy Awards, more than any other band and are ranked 22 by the Rolling Stones in their list of 100 Greatest Artists of all Time. Outside of their musical careers, U2 completes charity and humanitarian work to combat poverty and AIDS and other global issues that our globalizing war faces. I consider U2 as the most important and influential band of the post-punk era, joining ringing guitar rock, punkish independence, Celtic spirituality, and various other genres— all held together by singer/lyricist Bono’s transcendent vision and charisma.
Formed in 1967, they sold more than 200 million albums worldwide. They have also won 4 Grammy awards and helped define the progressive rock era. They are most significant for their introduction of fireworks and lights to their stage acts. Their song, “We Don’t Need No Education“ is still popular today, especially among rebellious kids.
Santana still has the touch 42 years later with their recent hits such as “Maria” and “Smooth”. They are a Latin rock band which has won 8 Grammy Awards and 3 Latin Grammy Awards. They are currently on tour with Michael Franti and Spearhead. Carlos Santana, the leader, was named No. 15 on Rolling Stones` list of 100 Greatest Guitarists of all Time.
