Once a mistress, does one ever become a bride? Apparently so. Some mistresses of celebrities and politicians have ended up with the prize ring on their left hand, but many more have not. Since the beginning of time, mistresses have been around. Whether they were classified as a concubine, paramour, or courtesan, mistresses are surely bound to be a part of mankind until the very end. Here is a list of the most infamous celebrity/political mistress couples that made my top ten list.
Oh, how I despise Camilla and how she wormed her way into the lives of the Royal Family! As it turns out, Charles had had a thing for Camilla for several decades, even while married to Princess Diana. Princess Diana died in 1997, and by 2005 Camilla Parker Bowles had already divorced her husband and wed Charles. Even Queen Elizabeth II can’t stand her daughter-in-law, so why should the rest of world like the woman that broke apart the marriage of their favorite princess. During the wedding of Prince William & Kate Middleton, Prince Charles and Camilla were seen waiting inside the foyer of the church to greet the Queen and Prince Phillip. As Queen Elizabeth II entered, she had a few words with a member of the church who was standing to Camilla’s right. Avoiding eye contact with Camilla, the Queen turned away from the church member and went directly for Prince Charles on Camilla’s left. Only after she greeted Charles was she forced to face Camilla.
Sister to Queen Anne Boleyn, she was seduced by two English Kings and was a key player in one of history’s most exciting dramas. . It’s rumoured that she bore two of the king’s children, though Henry did not acknowledge either of them as he had done with Henry FitzRoy, his son by Bessie Blount. Mary was was also rumoured to have been a mistress of Henry VIII’s rival, King Francis I of France; not to be confused with Pope Francis I.
Why didn’t Anne take a cue from big sister, Mary, that King Charles was bad news? After Mary’s “time” with the King, Anne was the next woman he was attracted to, or so we though. King Charles VIII fell hard for Anne, but because of her intelligence, she didn’t give in to his advances until it was in her best interest. Charles married Anne, but later had her beheaded for high treason. Following the coronation of her daughter Elizabeth I as Queen, Anne Boleyn was made into a martyr and heroine of the English Reformation, particularly through the works of John Foxe.
Eleanor Roosevelt hired Lucy Mercer for the role of Franklin Roosevelt’s personal secretary in 1913. By 1918, Eleanor discovered love letters between her husband and Mary and was on the verge of getting a divorce from Franklin. Hee couldn’t grant her one because his mother threatened to disinherit him if he divorced Eleanor. As Franklin’s political career was most important, he told Eleanor he ended the affair with Mary. According to history records, Mary and Franklin continued to stay in touch via his daughter as the middle person. The Roosevelts stayed married up until Franklin’s death of a stroke in 1945.
It is widely believed that Marilyn Monroe had a relationship with both John and Robert Kennedy. Some people speculate as to whether or not Marilyn Monroe was actually a mistress, while others swear by it and believe that she was murdered for her involvement with President Kennedy and her blackmailing ways. While deciding if she was a mistress or not just consider that when she visited JFK at Palm Springs, the day after singing happy birthday, Mr President, he made sure that his wife was not in attendance. It does not take much sense to speculate what actually went on in Palm Springs. The night before Monroe’s death, she called Jackie Kennedy to confess to affair with JFK and was told ‘that’s great, I’ll move out and you have all the problems’. She then visited Monroe’s hotel room to beg her not to go public with the affair as it will ruin her husband’s career.
