There is known that you can see free countries in the world, but there are many unfree countries as well. In some of these unfree countries, citizens are simple marionettes of the government, while in others everything is so restricted, that people do not know how is to live in a free country. Some of us cannot not even imagine how is to live in such a country.
If you are curious about the most unfree countries in the world, their habits and their restrictions, here is the top 10 list:
China is governing over Tibetan lands, a plateau region in Asia, and people who live here do not have any rights. The most important one is that they do not have the right to choose their future and to vote for a new government. The cannot have their own leaders, and China punishes every attempt in this direction. Many people were arrested, tortured, and executed by the Chinese government, without any process. Also, once in a while, China forbids foreigners to visit Tibet. The economy in the country is dominated by subsistence agriculture, though tourism is becoming a growing industry in recent decades, as well.
Uzbekistan is a doubly landlocked country in Central Asia, which was also part of the Soviet Union until it dissolved in the 1990s. In Uzbekistan, the legislature and the judiciary are totally controlled by the president Islam Karimov. He is helped by an executive group, who works strictly for him. There is no real opposition party in Uzbekistan, and any attempt to form one was punished. Any political members who tried to form unregistered parties, were easily repressed. Every year, about 100.000 Uzbek refugees leave the country, searching for a better life.
Turkmenistan formerly known as Turkmenia, is one of the Turkic states in Central Asia and was a part of the Soviet Union until its dissolution in 1991. Turkmenistan had for many decades a “president for life”. His name was Saparmurat Niyazov, and he died in 2006. He was very strict and implemented a lot of rules and restrictions. After his death, the country didn’t have any legitimate election. All the nongovernmental organizations are controlled by the state, while people and workers do not have any laws that can guarantee them work and safety.
Sudan has been ruled since 1989 by the president Omar Hassan al-Bashir, a former military officer. He is accused by the International Criminal Court for many war crimes, and there are even multiple arrest warrants for him. He has killed thousands of people since 2003, in Darfur. The south and the north of the country have the same problems, and violence if leading people’s life. The country also has territories disputes, especially over an oil-rich zone, named Abyei.
The Islamic insurgent group Al-Shabaab undermined the Transitional Federal Government of Somalia, taking control over the south and the center of the country. Shabaab is trying to enforce the old Islamic laws, based on brutality. All the areas controlled by the group are under terrorist attacks. US was trying to stop them, but it looks Shabaab is quite powerful. In antiquity, Somalia was an important commercial centre, and is among the most probable locations of the fabled ancient Land of Punt. Unfortunately, no one sees it this way in the modern day.
