World Health Organization Finally Admits It Has Underestimated The Ebola Crisis
The World Health Organization has finally admitted it has underestimated the Ebola crisis in West Africa. ‘Extraordinary measures’ are needed it said in a statement issued yesterday. It seems that the experiences of doctors on the ground in the affected areas has finally gotten through to them.
“Staff at the outbreak sites see evidence that the numbers of reported cases and deaths vastly underestimate the magnitude of the outbreak,” its statement said.
Medical staff have been reporting for weeks that the numbers of patients presenting with the disease is not a true representation of the numbers of people suffering from it. Fear of the authorities and superstition surrounding the disease is affecting the number of people willing to admit they, or a relative are suffering from the condition.
Even after the WHO admitting they have underestimated the scale of the problem there are still no travel bans in place to the affected areas. In addition, they have stated that catching Ebola on an aircraft is highly unlikely…I beg to differ, but there you go.
As a result of this statement Kenya Airways has decided to keep flying in and out of the affected zones. Kenya is already on the high-risk list this decision could quite easily transport the virus to East Africa.
In Nigeria several people have died after drinking salt water, rumoured to prevent people getting from getting Ebola.
Why is the World Health Organization not putting full international travel bans in place? Ebola will not walk into the UK or the United States, it will not swim to Australia or Canada, it will arrive on an aircraft.
Several airlines have imposed their own flight bans for fear of bringing the disease back to their home countries: Korean Air, Arik, ASKY, Emirates and British Airways have all cancelled flights to the affected areas and many other airlines have a vastly reduced service.
It comes to something when private companies are doing more to limit the spread of Ebola than either individual governments or the World Health Organization.
