Boat Carrying 30 Sinks in Nicaragua, 4 Still Missing
A boat carrying 30 people capsized in a Nicaraguan river and four people are missing, the Red Cross in Bluefields, in the Southern Atlantic Autonomous Region, or RAAS, said.
“A boat traveling the route from Bluefields to La Cruz de Rio Grande capsized … in the river. There were 30 people (on board), 26 got out and four are missing,” the deputy commander of the Emergency Corps, Adriana Berry, told Efe.
The accident occurred on Monday in the Grande de Matagalpa River near the town of Apawas, a rural community located between the central zone and Nicaragua’s Caribbean coast.
The Grande de Matagalpa River is the only communications route between the two points.
Nicaragua’s navy is continuing the search for the missing, who were identified as Alexander Hernandez, 22; Jacobo Guillen, 50; Mayerlin Winchan, 5, and Zulema Winchan, 2.
The 26 survivors had bruises and various other minor injuries, Berry said.
The cause of the accident has not yet been determined, RAAS authorities said.
