Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho expressed admiration for his Barcelona counterpart, Luis Enrique, but declined to comment on the players who left his former club, Real Madrid, during the summer transfer window.
Mourinho praised Enrique in comments at the yearly forum of elite coaches in the Swiss city of Nyon, sports daily AS said.
“Not only as a player, but as a person he was one of my favorites during the time I was in Barcelona. He was the right back, left back, left wing, right wing, the center forward, and if you needed, he was able to play as a goalkeeper,” Mourinho said.
He said he has not seen Enrique since he left Barcelona in 2000, but wished him well with the Blaugrana, adding that he has not spoken to current Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti, who succeeded Mourinho with the Blancos in 2013.
Mourinho declined to comment on the players who left Real Madrid during the summer transfer window, including Angel Di Maria and Xabi Alonso, saying he would only talk about matters relating to Chelsea.
Regarding Spanish striker Fernando Torres’ move from the Blues to AC Milan, Mourinho said, “He is a fantastic guy and a fantastic professional. We’ll miss him, the team and me, but we needed a change.”
Asked about Cesc Fabregas’ performance since coming to Chelsea from Barcelona, Mourinho pointed out that the former Arsenal player did not have to go through a period of adapting to the Premier League.
Fabregas is very happy to have signed with the London club, Mourinho said.
